Bone Edema: causes and remedies

Bone edema is an inflammatory process that occurs inside the trabecular or spongy bone, such as the knee and ankle, producing a buildup of fluid that weakens the bone itself. There are several pathologies that can trigger inflammation.

How it arises

Pathologies of traumatic origin (accident, Falls, bruises) and degenerative, due to the presence of pathologies such as arthrosis, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis.

A bone edema also occurs as a reaction of the bone due to high physical load or sports overload. This can cause injury to solid tissues such as calcium, phosphorus and collagen fibers, which can no longer provide stability and flexibility to the body, precisely because they are worn out.

Who is most at risk

It is above all sportsmen who are the subjects at greater risk; both professional sportsmen and those who train with higher loads than those that their body can tolerate and withstand. Overload is closely connected with the level of sports performance of each person and the progression in their activity, such as for those who abruptly switch from a sedentary lifestyle to a more active one, without the body being ready to respond to new stimuli and efforts.

Diagnostic tests

The diagnosis is provided by an MRI that will indicate whether the edema is the product of trauma or whether it is a response to degenerative lesions or other pathologies. In the Anamnesis should also include signs such as localized pain, swelling and hematoma.

Indicated treatments

Curative treatment varies depending on the criticality of inflammation.

It ranges from rest to physical activity in combination with an anti-inflammatory treatment to activities such as swimming, physical activities that do not involve impacts or muscle effort.

In more severe cases, magnetotherapy sessions are useful to reduce edema; in particular biostimulating magnetotherapy greatly reduces the healing time leading to total resolution of the pathology.
